Abstract: A single-phase ZrW[2]O[8] was prepared using the hydrothermal synthesis by decomposition of ZrW[2]O7(OH1.5,Cl0.5) 2H[2]O . The formation mechanism of ZrW[2]O[8] was described. The morphology of the material was represented as elongated particles with an intrinsic block structure. The stability fields of ZrW[2]O[8] were determined. The ZrW[2]O[8] demonstrated a negative thermal expansion behavior in the temperature range from 25°C to 750°C. Introduction of ZrW[2]O[8] particles as reinforcement element into a metal matrix can lead to the formation of an internal stress caused by the difference between values of thermal expansion of matrix and reinforcing additives, which improve its mechanical properties.
